What we learned at Birmingham Dentistry Show ‘23

Last month’s Dentistry Show at NEC Birmingham was CosTech’s biggest yet! Both in terms of our exhibition stand and the sheer number of dental professionals we were able to interact with.

Our presentation this year focused on two products designed to increase practice profits: Truvinci Aligners and the new Saber White range. The orthodontist-led aligner treatment and twin-approach whitening system were well received by attendees who were impressed by the premium presentation and competitive pricing.

Of course, we also took a selection of display models to show off the output of our five dedicated departments and held demonstrations of intraoral scanning for dentists who were curious but hadn’t yet invested in a scanner for their practice.

Here are our five key takeaways from the show:

Big demand for premium tooth whitening

While tooth whitening remains incredibly popular, patients are now demanding a product that looks and feels appropriate to the price they’ve spent. Saber White and the accompanying Saber Boost kit were designed to meet that demand while also feeling appropriate to an elegant clinical setting.

Patients prefer tooth whitening with a desensitizing agent

Many patients are scared to whiten their teeth in case it causes dental sensitivity. Offering them a whitening solution which contains a desensitizing agent (like Saber White Recovery Tablets) relieves that concern and reassures them that they’re in caring hands.

There is a lack of support for tricky aligner cases

For patients with particularly severe or awkward misalignment, some brands are struggling to support their dentists with troubleshooting. Thankfully our own Truvinci Aligners cases are each planned by the qualified Orthodontists at Illusion who remain on hand to assist our clients in the rare case they’re needed.

Digital dentistry is fast becoming the norm

While private independent practices started using scanners years ago, now even dental corporates are switching their practices en masse. The speed, accuracy and reduced lab fees associated with scanners are attracting more digital converts by the day.

Further movement away from the NHS system

It will come as little surprise that more dentists are cutting down on their NHS quotas in favour of Private treatment. Commonly cited reasons were work/life balance, better remuneration and the professional satisfaction of being better able to meet patient expectations.

Aligners and tooth whitening are ideal treatments for dentists shifting their focus from NHS toward the Private sector. Both aligners and whitening are incredibly popular with patients as well as benefitting from a fast turnover and good financial return. They continue to be our main product recommendation for practices looking to increase their profits.

Exhibitions are a great way for us to hear industry opinions from outside our client base and help us shape development plans for the coming year. Our next exhibition will be at the London Dentistry Show from 6th – 7th October this year and we hope to see as many of you there as possible.
