Tl;dr:
Standard soft night guard, cost-effective and suitable for most patients. Bi-Laminate night guard, lasts longer and stops the jaw locking in place.
Tooth grinding aka Bruxism is very common with many people doing it unconsciously during sleep and waking to sore jaws or headaches in the morning. It’s so widespread that there’s even a tooth-gnashing Pokémon named after the condition called Bruxish!
Often associated with stress, there was a notable increase in cases following the Covid-19 pandemic and we’re once again seeing night guard prescriptions on the rise. Luckily, we have options for protective appliances to suit each patient:
Standard Soft Night Guard
This is our basic night guard; it comes in at our lowest price and is more than sufficient for most patients. Those patients who grind with significant force and are concerned about wearing through the appliance quickly may benefit from switching to a Bi-Laminate Night Guard instead.
Bi-Laminate Night Guard
The bi-laminate guards combine a soft interior surface with a hard outer layer. The soft inside keeps the wearer comfortable and protected while the outer shell prevents the jaw from locking into place. This bi-laminate design lets the opposing jaw move freely and means the appliance will last longer.
Additional Features & Thickness Options
All our night guards come with a free storage case and require just 5 days in lab to manufacture (express turnarounds available). As standard we use 4mm blanks for night guards, but we also keep a ready stock of 2mm & 3mm for those patients who prefer something thinner*.
If you’d like to speak to our team about night guards or other custom dental appliances, please contact us via email or CosTech Portal.
* 2mm, 3mm & standard 4mm refers to the unformed material thickness. The final appliance will be thinner than this after processing.
